What is Luxury Vinyl?
What are Luxury Vinyl Plank and Luxury Vinyl Tile(LVP/LVT)? These types of vinyl flooring are composed of multiple layers that assist in the design, durability, and maintenance, and most have five distinct layers.
The first is the wear layer. This gives the luxury vinyl plank or tile its scratch and stain resistance.
The next layer is the print film that gives the product its realistic look of hardwood, ceramic tile, or stone. Some LVP/LVT floors may have a registered or embossed surface (or both) for a more realistic visual.
The third layer is a clear film layer for protection, followed by fourth core layer made from either stone plastic composite (SPC) or wood plastic composite (WPC).
The bottom layer of these is the backing layer, generally made of cork or foam. It is designed to serve as the underlayment for the vinyl flooring so that you don't have to install another material prior to laying down the vinyl flooring. Additionally, it functions as a cushion to make walking on the floor more comfortable, and a sound barrier to keep noise at bay.
Another distinction of luxury vinyl flooring is its durability and ability to withstand heavy traffic and wear. The thicker the wear layer, the more durable it will be. The wear layer thickness of luxury vinyl floors is at least 12 mil, with some as thick as 20 or even 30 mil, which we commonly see in commercial buildings. Moreover, LVPs are water-resistant and easy to clean, making them ideal for families with kids or pets.
Versatile, Durable, Stylish

Luxury vinyl flooring can be used in any room in the house, including kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. It's also a great option for high-traffic areas and commercial spaces.
LV flooring is not only durable but also hardwearing and long-lasting. The built-in scratch and stain guard protects the floors from daily wear and tear. LVP & LVT also come in various colors, styles, and patterns ranging from wood to stone to ceramic tile.
Water Resistant & Simple Maintenance
Water is no problem when choosing luxury vinyl flooring. While not completely waterproof, LVP/LVT are still great choices for kitchens, bathrooms and basements.
Regular sweeping and mopping with mild cleaners will keep your flooring looks fresh; no harsh chemicals, scrubbing, waxing or refinishing required.
Easily Installed & Affordable
LVP/LVT planks have a click and lock system, making them simple to install, no need for adhesives or nails. Optionally there are glue-down varieties that allow for more fluctuation in your subfloor.
One of luxury vinyl's greatest strengths is its affordability, you're getting a high-end floor without the high price tag of traditional wood or tile.
Vinyl Plank Flooring Options
WPC has a rigid foam core manufactured through a foaming co-extrusion process. The foaming process creates a lot of tiny air bubbles inside the core layer, like the tiny air holes in a kitchen sponge. These bubbles are what make WPC softer to walk on and more flexible, and why it’s better at stopping noise.
The core of SPC does not contain any air bubbles – it is a dense “solid board”. This is why SPC flooring is heavier, thinner, harder and more “solid”, similar to ceramic tiles. But this dense structure also provides excellent dimensional stability and resistance to heavy compression.
- SPC is more impact resistant and durable
- WPC lasts 15-25 years and SPC 15-30+ years
- WPC is warmer, softer underfoot, and quieter
- SPC is more stable & handles temp changes better
- WPC is more forgiving of uneven substrates
WPC or SPC is not a question of “which one is better”, but “which one is more suitable”.
Both are impact resistant, waterproof, stable, durable, comfortable under foot, and cost effective.
